Cristiano Ronaldo is a doubt for Portugal’s final camp before the 2026 World Cup after sustaining a hamstring injury, leaving the captain in a race to prove his fitness to head coach Roberto Martinez.
He limped out in the 81st minute of Al-Nassr’s meeting with Al-Fayha. The club said in a statement that he has a hamstring injury, has begun a rehabilitation programme and will be evaluated day by day.
The setback comes as Martinez prepares to name his squad for friendlies against Mexico on March 28 and the United States on March 31, fixtures viewed as vital preparation for the summer. His involvement is uncertain.
It is also a blow to Al-Nassr’s title push, with the 41-year-old on 21 goals this season. The medical team are overseeing his recovery and a cautious approach is likely to avoid longer-term problems that could put his World Cup involvement at risk.
The Portuguese federation will monitor developments before the squad is confirmed. If Ronaldo is unavailable, Martinez would need to assess alternative attacking options against North American opposition. Supporters will hope the men’s international record goalscorer can recover in time.
