Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta is once again at the centre of transfer rumours, with Leeds United and Aston Villa both showing interest. According to Fraser Fletcher of TeamTalk, “Jean-Philippe Mateta has no interest in a move to Leeds but the prospect of heading to Aston Villa is rousing the striker.”
The French forward has enjoyed an impressive campaign, scoring 16 Premier League goals in the 2024/25 season. His performances have naturally drawn attention from clubs seeking to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the January transfer window.
Leeds United, newly promoted back to the Premier League, were believed to be keen admirers of Mateta. With his physical presence and proven finishing ability, he seemed an ideal candidate to lead their frontline. Reports even suggested Leeds were preparing a £40 million bid in January.

However, according to the report “Mateta’s ambitions stretch far beyond the Yorkshire club.” The striker is aiming for a move to a side competing in European competitions, something Leeds are unable to offer at this stage.
Aston Villa have emerged as a genuine contender in this transfer battle. Sources quoted by TeamTalk reveal that Villa are “very keen” on Mateta and have held discreet discussions with Palace representatives.
Unai Emery’s side secured European qualification last season and continue to build momentum with a squad capable of competing at a higher level. At 28, Mateta recognises that this opportunity could represent his final chance at a career-defining move.
Despite mounting interest, Crystal Palace remain firm in their stance. With Mateta under contract until 2027, chairman Steve Parish has praised his importance to the squad and is unwilling to sanction a sale unless a significant fee—possibly exceeding £60 million—is offered.
The striker’s situation highlights the competitive nature of the Premier League transfer market, where ambition, timing, and financial strength collide. For Mateta, the next move could define the legacy of his career.
From an Aston Villa fan’s perspective, the reports linking Mateta with a potential move to Villa Park are both exciting and cautious in equal measure. On one hand, Mateta’s goal tally speaks for itself—16 goals in a single Premier League season is proof that he can deliver consistently at the top level. Pairing him with Villa’s current attacking options could elevate the side’s European aspirations and give Unai Emery an even more versatile forward line.
However, fans will also be wary of the price tag. Palace are rumoured to want upwards of £60 million if they are to part ways with their star man. For a player who turns 29 next year, that kind of fee carries significant risk. Supporters may question whether Villa should invest that amount in someone approaching the latter stages of his prime, or instead pursue a younger striker with resale value.
There’s also the question of chemistry. Emery has built a tight-knit group, and while Mateta’s profile fits the system, adapting to new surroundings mid-season can be tricky. Still, the lure of a proven Premier League striker is undeniable.
For many Villa supporters, the hope will be that if this deal happens, it signals the club’s ambition to consistently compete in Europe and push into the top four conversation. If Mateta brings his Palace form with him, the gamble might just pay off.
