Leeds United have stepped up their move for Southampton midfielder Shea Charles with an improved offer, but a new rival could complicate the chase.

An initial bid earlier this month was followed by an increased proposal last week as Leeds aimed to secure the Northern Ireland international before pre-season.

According to Football Insider, Crystal Palace want Charles and believe the offer of Europa League football strengthens their hand. The Eagles have not lodged a formal bid, but a move has been suggested as likely.

Southampton are standing firm on a valuation thought to be around £30m for the 22-year-old, and have so far shown little inclination to budge.

With Hayden Hackney seemingly set to leave the Championship for Everton for less than that figure, there may be scope for Leeds to manoeuvre. That helps explain why they remain at the table.

Leeds will not be pressured into paying above their valuation. Attention now turns to who moves next and whether Southampton shift their stance.
