Daughter of Corinthians legend honoured by law for autistic children

The daughter of goalkeeper Cássio, a Corinthians idol and current Cruzeiro player, has given her name to a new law enacted in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. The Maria Luiza Law guarantees the admission and inclusion of children and adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in private schools in the municipality.

With this law, institutions will have to issue a document with a negative response in cases where atypical parents wish to enroll their children with ASD. This aims to investigate whether refusals have discriminatory motives, and schools may be sanctioned in accordance with the Federal Constitution and the Statute of the Child and Adolescent (ECA).

This year, Cássio shared a story about the difficulty of enrolling his daughter in schools in Belo Horizonte, where he currently lives while playing for Cruzeiro. He detailed the search for educational institutions, including those that call themselves inclusive, which did not explain the reasons for denying enrollment.

Now, this kind of attitude will have to be justified and, if necessary, will be punished. Discrimination occurs if enrollment is denied for any reason related to the autism diagnosis; additional financial or bureaucratic requirements are created that are not applied to other students; extra charges are imposed because of the student’s ASD condition; and refusal or omission in providing a specialized aide, when proven necessary.

Since discovering his daughter's diagnosis, Cássio has become one of the main activists for the cause in sports and in Brazil. At Corinthians, he has carried out actions like the one seen in the image above, as well as supporting the Autistas Alvinegros collective. In addition, the Neo Química Arena also has a special room for people with ASD.
