Why Liverpool Fans Should Be Excited About Andoni Iraola

The potential arrival of Andoni Iraola at Liverpool has created obvious debate, but on Media Matters for Anfield Index, David Lynch made clear why supporters may have real reason to feel excited.

Speaking to Dave Davis, Lynch focused heavily on Iraola’s football and how it could reconnect with the energy of Anfield. When Davis referenced Iraola’s preference for “chaos over organisation,” Lynch replied that it felt “very much kind of a bit more kind of the Jurgen Klopp school of thinking” than Arne Slot’s approach.

That matters because Lynch felt Liverpool fans had not always embraced the previous style. “One thing you can absolutely say you don’t have to be worried about is the style of play,” he said.

Bournemouth football praised under Iraola

Lynch pointed to Iraola’s Bournemouth side as a clear reason for optimism. “Bournemouth have been such a joy to watch under Iraola,” he said.

He also added that Iraola’s own comments about football suggest supporters can expect something lively. “You listen to the way he talks about the game and what he prizes,” Lynch said, “and I think you can see that it’s going to be exciting.”

That excitement was not presented as blind faith. Lynch acknowledged that there may be concerns around how everything works, but the aesthetic appeal of Iraola’s football came through strongly.

“I’m very much looking forward to watching it from a purely aesthetic point of view,” he said.

Anfield could suit Iraola’s approach

A central theme of the conversation was the relationship between Liverpool’s crowd and the team. Lynch said Liverpool have seemed “at its best when it’s kind of crowd and football team working together and playing a brand of football.”

He also recalled that there were moments under Slot when this happened, including “the comeback against Brighton” when Liverpool were “counter attack, counter attack” and “the whole thing’s building.”

But Lynch’s view was that Iraola may offer that feeling more consistently. He described it as “that chaos, that kind of physicality, the running” and “the madness of it all and the way that Anfield gets wrapped up in that.”

His conclusion was clear: “Iriola does seem a better fit for that kind of thing.”

Fans may quickly get on board

For Liverpool supporters, buy in matters. Lynch felt Iraola’s approach could deliver it quickly if implemented successfully.

“I just think it’s just something that the fans are going to be able to get more on board with,” he said.

Later in the podcast, Lynch also connected the managerial change to renewed optimism around Liverpool. “I think the optimism has changed immediately, hasn’t it?” he said.

He explained that it had been difficult to believe things would improve without a change of head coach, even with signings. But with a new coach and a different approach, he said Liverpool can “look forward to a more exciting brand of football” and “things changing for this Liverpool side.”

Lynch also said the change had “added a new level of excitement” and “probably a bit more excitement around the signings.”

That was the key message from David Lynch to Dave Davis on Anfield Index. Andoni Iraola’s potential arrival should excite Liverpool fans because it promises energy, intensity, directness and a style that could once again make Anfield feel central to the team’s identity.
