The months-long stand-off is over: Dayot Upamecano is staying at FC Bayern. After intensive negotiations, the French international has now given his commitment to the Munich club
The poker game surrounding Dayot Upamecano had dragged on for months. FC Bayern presented the 27-year-old central defender with an exceptionally comprehensive contract offer, but a decision was a long time coming. The pressure grew internally, and there was also increasing public talk of a deadline and a possible withdrawal of the offer
The situation has now been reversed, with transfer insider Fabrizio Romano reporting that Upamecano has given his commitment to the German record champions, with the Frenchman on the verge of signing a new four-year contract in Munich until 2030
The package is impressive: around 20 million euros in annual salary, a similar amount in hand money and a contractually anchored exit clause are said to be part of the agreement, making Upamecano one of the top earners in the Bayern squad in future and also one of the top central defenders in Europe
The decision comes as a relief at Säbener Straße. In recent weeks, the unclear future of the defensive boss had repeatedly led to discussions, partly because Bayern were looking at possible alternatives for the center of defence at the same time. A transfer-free departure in the summer was a realistic possibility at times
In sporting terms, Upamecano is a fixture under Vincent Kompany and, together with Jonathan Tah, forms the defensive foundation of the Munich team. With the agreement that has now been reached, Bayern have gained planning security in a key position – and at the same time sent a clear signal to the competition and the team
The contract extension ends one of the most complex personnel debates at FC Bayern in recent months. Upamecano can now concentrate fully on the sporting side of things again, while Munich make decisive progress with their squad planning for the coming years
The official announcement of the extension is expected in the coming days, at which point calm should finally return to a matter that has long preoccupied FC Bayern.
