Dennis Cirkin has confirmed he will leave Sunderland this summer after an emotional Instagram farewell. The player said in a post that representing the club had been among the greatest privileges of his life.
In April his future remained unclear, with the possibility of a free-agent exit among the options and competition intense at full-back. Trai Hume featuring at left-back at Villa Park underlined Cirkin’s place in the pecking order at the time.
The 24-year-old arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2021 when Sunderland were in League One, helping Alex Neil’s side win promotion. He became a standout in the Championship and made more than 100 appearances.
This season he played 10 times in the Premier League, his final outing a draw at Wolves in early May. Injury setbacks again checked his progress, although he impressed on his top-flight introduction during AFCON.
In his message he thanked the city and its supporters, evoking the roar of the Stadium of Light and saying the club had made him feel at home. His announcement comes before the retained list is published.
