The status of Vinicius Jr. at Real Madrid has changed radically in recent weeks. From being an undisputed starter under Carlo Ancelotti, he has become a question mark under Xabi Alonso.

The winger has already been left out of the starting lineup twice in five games this season. Since Alonso took over in June, the Brazilian has played the full game only once in 11 official matches.

Vinicius’ camp unhappy, club surprised

Now, according to ESPN, the situation is causing frustration within Vinicius’ camp. The impression at the start of the season is clear: Xabi Alonso does not show the same confidence in the 24-year-old as his predecessor did.

For Vinicius, being left on the bench is not entirely new at Real Madrid. The difference is that under Ancelotti it only happened due to physical strain or return from injury, effectively to rest him.

Xabi, however, has made clear that he works differently from the Italian. He insists there will be more rotation and that everyone is important.

At the club offices there is an awareness that the relationship between the Brazilian and the Spanish coach is not ideal. Despite that, there was great surprise at Valdebebas when Vinicius was left out of the lineup for the Champions League opener at home vs Marseille.

Contract talks not progressing

It must be noted that all this is playing out against the backdrop of Vinicius’ contract negotiations at Real Madrid not progressing.

Talks had advanced in May, with a renewal suggested at €20 million per year plus €10 million in bonuses. However, the club’s latest proposal did not include the add-ons.

For that reason, the player’s representatives believe that extending the contract for three more years under the proposed terms is not justified, after all Vinicius currently earns €17 million net per season.

Different sources within the club, however, have presented a contradictory version, expressing some dissatisfaction with how the player has handled the negotiations.

One source close to the process stated that at one stage they believed everything was on track for a renewal, but it became complicated when Vinicius did not keep his word and altered some of the terms.

At Real Madrid, the belief had always been that Vinicius would eventually renew. But there is a feeling now that if things do not change, it would not be surprising if the Brazilian simply ran down his contract until 2027 and left on a free transfer.

Amidst all this, Vinicius continues to train normally and shows no issues in his relationship with the coach or his team-mates. On the contrary, he is regarded as one of the most popular figures in the squad. How the situation evolves, remains to be seen.
