Newcastle United head into the Tyne-Wear derby with fresh £100m transfer talk around Sandro Tonali creating an unwelcome distraction for Eddie Howe.
According to Sunderland Echo, Tonali’s agent, Giuseppe Riso, has suggested the Italy midfielder could ultimately join a title-chasing Premier League side, naming the level of Arsenal or Manchester City. He said the move to England was designed to turn Tonali into a star and rated him among the most valuable Italian players.
The remarks have fuelled debate over the 25-year-old’s long-term future days before Sunderland visit St James’ Park. Tonali joined from AC Milan in 2023 for about £52m and is contracted until 2029, with an option for a further year.
Interest from leading clubs could increase this summer, particularly if he impresses on the international stage. Riso indicated the upcoming World Cup may shape the next phase, with scenarios likely to unfold after the tournament.
The timing is delicate. Tonali missed the 1-0 Premier League win over Chelsea at the weekend through illness, the same bug that recently affected Nick Woltemade and Anthony Gordon. Howe is hopeful he will return soon as Newcastle prepare for a Champions League last-16 tie with Barcelona before Sunday’s derby.
Newcastle are understood to have no intention of selling and would seek around £80m to £100m if bids arrive. Tonali remains central to Howe’s plans, with three goals and seven assists in 46 appearances this season after helping deliver last year’s Carabao Cup.
