Eduardo Camavinga’s (23) place in France’s squad for this summer’s FIFA World Cup is under threat, according to a report from L’Équipe.
When he left Stade Rennais to join Real Madrid, it was thought that Camavinga was the future of France’s midfield. However, his development has been difficult, with his pathway to the first team initially blocked by the likes of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric, most notably.
For Les Bleus, he has never managed to truly hold down a place in the side. In order to gain minutes, he has, at times, played out of position, notably at left-back. During the current international break, Camavinga found game time limited. He only featured for 26 minutes across the two games, with those minutes coming off the bench in the win over Colombia on Sunday night. He did not feature at all against Brazil, and then could not carve out a place in the starting XI against Colombia, despite Didier Deschamps fielding a B-team.
It is within that context that Camavinga’s place in the France squad ahead of the World Cup is in question. With Deschamps also set to call up three left-backs (Lucas and Théo Hernández, and Lucas Digne), there is also no utility in taking him as an option in this position.
