Sunderland face significant close-season calls, with eight players set to leave this summer as their deals run down while a memorable Premier League return nears its end.

According to Sky Sports Germany, Lutsharel Geertruida will not remain beyond the summer, with Sunderland not triggering the €23m option to buy. He will return to RB Leipzig, and a permanent move elsewhere is being explored amid interest across Europe’s top five leagues.

The Netherlands international has provided a solid presence during a season-long loan at the Stadium of Light after arriving last summer.

Eight players are approaching the end of their current terms this summer: Simon Moore, Bertrand Traore, Lutsharel Geertruida, Dennis Cirkin, Harrison Jones, Niall Huggins, Zak Johnson and Dan Neil. Huggins, Johnson and Neil are currently out on loan.

Beyond 2026, contract deadlines also fall in 2027, 2028, 2029 and 2030 across the squad, leaving a broader retention plan to resolve once the campaign concludes.
