Ella Toone hailed Hinata Miyazawa’s fantastic effort from range that put Manchester United 1-0 up against Liverpool in the Women’s Super League.

United took all three points back to Leigh after a 2-0 victory.

Miyazawa struck a ball on the rise with her left foot and it flew into the net off the inside the post in the fourth minute of the game – an effort Toone described as “unreal”.

And the Lioness had plenty more praise for her team-mate, although she was also quick to suggest jokingly that Miyazawa should have got herself a second goal as well.

“She’s an unbelievable player, I absolutely love playing with her,” Toone said to Sky Sports after the match. “She’s got so much quality, defensively she does a lot of work, but on the ball as well she’s unreal. It was nice for her to get a goal today – and she should have got another one!”

Ella Toone: We should be happy with ourselves

It was Toone herself who scored United’s second, in the second minute of added time at the end of the first half, and United maintained that two-goal advantage throughout the second half as well.

“I thought first half we played really well,” she said. “I think we need to be a little bit more ruthless when we dominate so much of the ball, we need to create chances and finish them. Sometimes 2-0 is a difficult scoreline coming in at half-time and the next goal is really important, and I think second half we could have been a lot better, a lot cleaner on the ball, and I thought we forced a lot of things.

“But that’s the standards that we have and at the end of the day we’ve got the three points, scored two goals, and conceded none, so we should be happy with ourselves.”

United are unbeaten in the WSL so far this season. They have also beaten Leicester City and London City Lionesses in the league, and also have a goalless draw against Arsenal to their credit. They have also progressed to the main draw of the UEFA Women’s Champions League having made it through the qualifying rounds.

Manchester United’s next match in the Women’s Super League will be on Friday, 3rd October, when they host defending champions Chelsea.
