Construction has begun at Elland Road as Leeds United start a stadium overhaul intended to place the ground among Europe’s elite venues. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the project marks the first step in a major capacity and facilities upgrade.
Groundwork took place over the weekend and into this week, with preparatory works ongoing at the site.
Major construction is scheduled after the current season, taking capacity from 38,000 to 53,000. Plans centre on expanding the West and North Stands, alongside targeted alterations to the South Stand.
The redevelopment will deliver UEFA Category 4 status. Leeds City Council approved the scheme in January, including partial demolition and redevelopment of the West Stand and outline permission to increase the North Stand’s capacity. Concerns over travel, parking and disruption were noted during the process, but councillors backed the plans.
On completion, Elland Road will become the seventh-largest football stadium in England. Photos have charted early progress at the ground.
