Enzo Maresca on James Trafford with Leeds in discussions over deal | OneFootball

"I know James because he was my keeper when I was with the Under-23s, so I know James very good," said Manchester City head coach Enzo Maresca. He was speaking at his introductory press conference, as quoted by City Xtra.

Leeds are seeking a new goalkeeper and remain in discussions over a deal for Trafford, their number one target. David Ornstein reported on Thursday that he was leaning towards joining Leeds.

"But again, when the transfer window is open, now or in January, anything can happen. So we’ll see, but at the moment he’s one of our keepers."

Trafford came through City’s academy during Maresca’s spell as Under-23s coach, then left in July 2023 to join Burnley in a £15m move.

After impressing for the Clarets, City activated a buy-back clause last summer for £31m, but he had limited game time behind new first-choice Gianluigi Donnarumma.

His future was expected to be settled after this summer’s World Cup, with the question now arising early in Maresca’s tenure following Pep Guardiola’s departure at the end of last season.
