Espanyol have condemned racist chanting heard during Spain’s 0-0 draw with Egypt at their stadium, and defended their fanbase. The club said in a statement that the incidents were unacceptable and at odds with the sport’s values.

The match on Tuesday night featured repeated Islamophobic chanting from sections of the crowd, prompting widespread anger across football. The refrain targeted anyone not jumping as being Muslim.

Espanyol underlined their long-standing commitment to tackling discrimination. The club also stressed the identity of their ground as an inclusive, respectful venue that has regularly staged international fixtures in a calm setting.

The Catalan side defended their supporters, calling accusations against them unjust and disproportionate. The fixture was organised by the Spanish federation, the RFEF, and drew a mixed audience, while the behaviour came from an isolated group that did not represent the club or its fans.

The club reiterated a commitment to keep ensuring a safe and respectful environment for everyone.
