Scoring his first goal for Roma on the very day of the derby. Few players have done so in Roma’s history: the last was Yanga Mbiwa in 2015, when his header decided a derby that would have secured qualification for the Champions League.
Before him, the names of Piacentini and Balzaretti remain etched in the memory.
Now Evan Ferguson will try, returning to the starting lineup and hoping to break new ground after two games where he played hard for the team but little for the goals.
He would also be the first Irishman to score in a capital derby. A goal that would end the former Brighton player’s long drought: the 2004-born player has found the back of the net twice for Ireland in recent outings, but hasn’t scored for a club since October 26, 2024, against Wolverhampton.
Injuries and layoffs have been a factor, but now Gasperini expects the number 11 to make an impact.
Behind him, Leggo writes, Soulé will certainlyfeature in Roma’s attack, along with one of El Aynaoui and El Shaarawy, given Dybala’s injury.
This would be Ferguson’s first ever derby goal: while playing for Brighton, he never managed to score against Crystal Palace in the so-called “M23 derby.”
