Everton are hoping to take advantage of “some vulnerability” Liverpool have shown this season when the two sides meet in the Merseyside Derby this weekend, David Moyes says.
The Reds are the clear favourites to win at Anfield on Saturday afternoon after winning all of their five games in all competitions.
Despite their winning run, Liverpool have been frequently exposed at the back, given up two-goal leads three times, and needed a goal in the last ten minutes of each outing to secure victory.
Everton, meanwhile, are also on a good run of form; they are unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions, winning three of them as they sit sixth in the Premier League table.
Asked how he will try to exploit their local rival’s weaknesses to beat them away for the first time since 2021, Moyes responded: “I certainly wouldn’t tell you [what I’ll tell my players] because that would be giving it away but your question is a good one in as much as Liverpool have shown at different times where they have been very good but other times when they have shown some vulnerability when they have conceded goals.
“We will have to try and take advantage of those moments as well. We played them last year at Anfield and lost to an offside goal and we want to try and run them close again and maybe this time things will go in our favour.”
Liverpool spent a whopping £446.4m on new signings in the summer transfer window, bolstering what was already a very strong squad. Moyes praised their business in the market and the work done by counterpart Arne Slot since replacing Jurgen Klopp last year.
“They’ve brought in a lot of really good players, over recent years Jurgen Klopp’s teams have been fantastic and I think Arne Slot has come in and done a fantastic job for this club since he arrived.
“They’ve gone and bought some top players, so they’ve looked to improve again but I think we’ve improved as well and I think from that point of view I have to look at us and what we’re doing and I want us to keep improving and getting better if we can.”
After starting for Liverpool in the Champions League in midweek, Alexander Isak could make his first appearance for the club in the Premier League since completing his British-record move from Newcastle United on Deadline Day. But Moyes is more concerned about having his own players prepared for the challenge ahead rather than worry about individual opponents.
“I can’t focus on the Liverpool players, I’ve got to focus on getting my own players ready and fit for the game and get them performing well,” he said.
“Undoubtedly you have to consider that they have got some really talented footballers and Isak is another one of them.”
