According to Sunderland Echo, Sunderland look set for strong World Cup representation after qualifying confirmed a 48-nation field in North America.

Tuesday’s play-offs sealed the final berths, with Italy beaten on penalties by Bosnia and Herzegovina after edging Northern Ireland, featuring Trai Hume and Dan Ballard, in the semi-final in Zenica.

For the Netherlands, Lutsharel Geertruida made three qualifiers and played 73 minutes in Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with Ecuador, the 20-cap star’s versatility making omission by Ronald Koeman unlikely. Chemsdine Talbi logged 13 qualifying minutes but has four caps since and is in contention. Brian Brobbey led the line in that friendly and, despite one goal in 10 caps, remains in the frame.

Ecuador’s Nilson Angulo missed the Netherlands game through injury yet has 12 caps and featured in their final four qualifiers, including a 1-0 win over Argentina. For Paraguay, Omar Alderete remains a cornerstone and will start this summer if fit.

Wilson Isidor switched to Haiti, earning two caps and a first senior goal, a late equaliser in a 1-1 draw with Iceland. Habib Diarra has four goals in 18 caps and, with Sunderland form on the rise, will surely make Senegal’s squad.

Noah Sadiki played 73 minutes in DR Congo’s intercontinental play-off, where he is joined by Arthur Masuaku, on loan at Lens. Granit Xhaka played all but 14 minutes, scored twice and captained his country. This could be his last World Cup, and he will be determined to make his mark.
