Chris Hughton has been linked with a sensational return to Tottenham Hotspur

Tottenham Hotspur are at risk of falling into the Championship this season following a dismal campaign under both Thomas Frank and Igor Tudor.

The London outfit are competing against West Ham, Nottingham Forest and Leeds United to remain in the top flight, with Burnley and Wolves all but confirmed to be going down in 19th and 20th.

Spurs finished 17th in the previous campaign, but finished 13 points clear of the bottom three, and they qualified for the Champions League anyway through their Europa League triumph.

However, it’s been another difficult league season for the club, who are facing the prospect of a second managerial sacking since Ange Postecoglou departed in the summer.

Thomas Frank was dismissed in February, with Igor Tudor coming in as his replacement to oversee the remainder of the term.

But the Croatian is now also facing the exit after suffering a fifth defeat in seven games in charge on Sunday when the team lost 3-0 to Forest.

It has been reported by Teamtalk that Spurs could turn to former Birmingham City and Nottingham Forest boss Chris Hughton to take over from Tudor.

The 67-year-old is understood to be on the Premier League side's shortlist, alongside Austrian coach Adi Hutter, with Tim Sherwood and Ryan Mason also being considered as possible options.

It’s believed that a change in the dugout is likely, with the club currently enjoying a three week gap between league fixtures due to the international break and the FA Cup, which they have been eliminated from.

While results are a factor in the decision to look for a new coach to oversee the remainder of the season, a bereavement in Tudor’s family is also seen as a reason the need to look for replacements.

The Tottenham Hotspur boss’ father passed away during the weekend, and it’s being reported that he may walk away from his position as a result.

Hughton has been out of work for the last two years, with his most recent role coming as the Ghana national team manager.

His last club role was with the Reds, where he oversaw 14 wins from 53 games from October 2020 to September 2021.

Hughton also managed the likes of Newcastle United, Birmingham, Norwich City and Brighton in his career.

The 67-year-old began his coaching career at Spurs, where he even had three separate stints as interim manager.

The former Ireland international has spent 13 years with the London outfit as a player, making almost 400 appearances for the club.

Tottenham Hotspur have left themselves scrambling for short-term solutions

There’s a very real possibility that Spurs go down this season given the level of their performances in the last few months.

Tudor hasn’t been able to affect any change in his seven games in charge, with his one victory coming as a consolation in the second leg of their Champions League elimination to Atletico Madrid.

Hughton knows the club well, but his recent managerial record isn’t inspiring either, and it might not be enough to stay ahead of 18th place West Ham.

His record at Nottingham Forest wasn’t especially impressive, nor did he achieve much at Birmingham or Norwich, and it would now be quite a turnaround if he played a role in the Reds’ survival in the Premier League by taking over Spurs.
