Arsenal secured their first home victory of the new campaign in emphatic style, with Mikel Arteta delighted at the manner in which his side cruised to a 5-0 win over Leeds United. The Gunners, much improved from the performance against Manchester United, delivered a commanding display against the newly promoted side.

Jurrien Timber was the standout performer with two goals and an assist, while Viktor Gyökeres also opened his account with a brace. Bukayo Saka added the other goal before being forced off injured, leaving Arsenal with mixed emotions despite such a dominant display. Martin Ødegaard’s injury also cast a shadow over proceedings, but Arteta’s pride in the performance was clear.

Arteta praises dominant display

In his post-match presser, Arteta said: “It’s exactly how we wanted to start the first game, we won in a really convincing way. You could sense something, especially in the atmosphere before the match. I think we have to be very proud of the way we played, the way we dominated the game, not conceding any shots almost, and the clean sheet.

“On top of that, a lot of good moments. Viktor scoring his first two goals for the club, I’m thrilled and delighted for Jurrien after that long time after injuring his ankle and the hours that he’s put in with all the physios and the medical department to score two goals at Emirates Stadium, very special. Mosquera making his debut as well for the club, and then one of the highlights, without any question of a doubt, Max coming in at 15 and making his debut and winning a penalty. So very proud.”

Debutants shine at the Emirates

The occasion carried special significance for several players. Viktor Gyökeres, Noni Madueke and Martin Zubimendi all made their first competitive home starts, each contributing to the victory. Meanwhile, 15-year-old Max Dowman made his Arsenal and Premier League debut, becoming the second youngest player ever to feature in the competition behind Ethan Nwaneri.

Dowman once again demonstrated his remarkable quality, winning a late penalty and showing maturity beyond his years. His emergence gives Arsenal yet another exciting talent to look forward to this season.

Arsenal’s first home outing of the campaign could hardly have gone better. With goals, clean sheets and debuts, fans will be thrilled at the start made by Arteta’s new-look squad.
