Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is reportedly seeking outside investment

It was recently revealed that Sheffield Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is seeking foreign investment into the club.

The Owls began the 2025/26 campaign in promising fashion, narrowly losing away at Leicester City in what was a spirited performance following the disastrous summer the club had just been through.

However, the Steel City side have picked up just one point in their next four matches and sit above only arch-rivals Sheffield United in the Championship standings.

Matters were made worse with an EFL Cup exit at the hands of League Two side Grimsby Town, removing any sort of positive distraction in the form of cup competitions.

After months of delayed payments, transfer embargoes and stadium troubles, it was recently revealed by journalist Alan Nixon via his Patreon channel that Chansiri is actively looking for outside investment into Wednesday to avoid having to sell the club.

The report stated that the Owls met their financial obligations at the end of August due to this, and that any investment would have to be secured against the club's assets, which could include Hillsborough itself.

In theory, Wednesday have been available to buy for months, but Chansiri’s valuation of £100 million has priced out any interested parties.

The Steel City side’s supporters have carried out a number of protests against their Thai businessman owner during the early stages of this season, which has included delaying entry into The King Power Stadium before their first game of the season, a mock funeral for the club being held before their first home league match against Stoke, and a boycott of their EFL Cup clash with Leeds United.

Speaking exclusively to Football League World, Sky Sports pundit and former Aston Villa midfielder, Lee Hendrie, hopes that fresh investment can represent a beacon of positivity that Sheffield Wednesday have sorely missed in recent times.

“I hope this does get resolved for Sheffield Wednesday,” stated Hendrie. “All the fans want it resolved, I'm sure Chansiri wants it resolved as well.

“We've heard lots of positive vibes and talk, some noise around a potential takeover, potential investments, but this does look like it's getting closer, which is what the club needs.

“Trying to stay in the Championship is going to be massive for them, particularly after the start they’ve had.

“They just need something that's going to give them an injection of confidence and give a boost to every single person that's involved in the club. So, hopefully this happens.”

Although fresh investment would relieve a lot of Sheffield Wednesday’s financial woes, it also signifies the fact that Chansiri has no intention of giving up his ownership of the club anytime soon.

This will be incredibly tough news for the Owls’ faithful to take, after the torment the Thai businessman has caused them over the past few months.

Some change is better than no change, and a large number of new investors could have a massive effect on how the club is run in years to come.

However, that appears to be wishful thinking at this moment in time, given Chansiri’s track record, and the Wednesday fanbase would much rather see their beloved side sold to a completely new owner.
