Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that former Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been approached by Ajax over a shock return to the club.

Ten Hag in frame for two major jobs

Earlier this week, it emerged that Ten Hag – who was sacked by Bayer Leverkusen after just three games – is a candidate for the Wolverhampton Wanderers job.

David Ornstein revealed that Ten Hag was on Wolves’ list alongside Gary O’Neil, who has since withdrawn from the running.

Wolves are on the hunt for a new manager after parting ways with Vitor Pereira, who oversaw a woeful start to the 2025/26 campaign.

Earlier on Thursday, Dutch news outlet AD revealed that Ten Hag is also a candidate for the Ajax managerial position. It was reported that Ten Hag recently held talks with technical director Alex Kroes over potentially replacing John Heitinga at the Johan Cruyff Arena.

Heitinga’s sacking has now been confirmed, with Romano further noting that Ten Hag is indeed being eyed to assume the hot seat in Amsterdam.

Romano confirms talks between Ajax and Ten Hag

Romano wrote on X about the ex-United head coach, “Understand Erik ten Hag has been approached by Ajax over possible return to the club as Heitinga got sacked.”

“Talks ongoing but no decision yet by Erik ten Hag, who already didn’t advance in talks with Wolves.”

Appointed from Ajax in the summer of 2022, Ten Hag lasted two-and-a-half years at Old Trafford before being sacked in October 2024 following a string of poor results.

He took charge of Ajax in 2017, succeeding Marcel Keizer.

Ten Hag enjoyed a lot of success at Ajax. He won eight major trophies, delivering two domestic doubles and ending Ajax’s drought since their last Eredivisie title in 2014.

He became the first Ajax manager since Louis van Gaal to reach a Champions League semi-final. Ten Hag also holds the record for the fastest manager in Eredivisie history to reach 100 league wins with Ajax, achieving it in just 128 matches.
