The defence, which has often been criticized in recent years, has been stable for the most part this calendar year. Whether it’s the ever-present Konrad Laimer or Dayot Upamecano, who has finally been consistent under Vincent Kompany, Munich’s defenders have impressed in many games. But there have also been some disappointments, such as Minjae Kim. Who do you think was the best player in defence?
The new year is approaching and with it a look back at the calendar year that will soon end: Who is your Bayern player of the year 2025? We’ll start with the defense – and thus also the goalkeepers. You can vote here and explain your choice in the comments.
Manuel Neuer remained Bayern’s number one goalkeeper in 2025. The 39-year-old showed his experience in many games, but was not free of mistakes and repeatedly missed a few games due to injury. Jonas Urbig made the most of his opportunities as a substitute and made a strong showing, providing important arguments for the future. Daniel Peretz, who was loaned out in the summer, and Sven Ulreich were also in the extended goalkeeping pool. However, they did not play a major role in the sport.
Jonathan Tah arrived in the summer of 2025 and immediately established himself in the starting eleven. With his calmness, overview and leadership quality, Tah immediately brought stability to the center of defence. Dayot Upamecano found even more consistency alongside him. Despite making a serious mistake recently against Arsenal, his development in 2025 was noticeably positive.

Eric Dier was part of the central defense in the 2024/25 season and took on responsibility in phases with many failures and knew how to convince. Despite mutual interest in a contract extension, Dier left the club for Monaco at the end of the season.
Hiroki Ito had already been signed in the summer of 2024, injured his metatarsal shortly after his transfer and initially missed several months. After a brief comeback in the spring, he suffered another metatarsal fracture in March 2025. He only returned to the squad in November.
Minjae Kim was left behind in the internal competition. Last season, he still made many star appearances, but often failed to impress – partly due to injury problems. This season, he is usually only used as a rotation player. Josip Stanisic, on the other hand, impressed with his reliability and flexibility, fulfilling his duties calmly and efficiently. Sacha Boey was also part of the squad for the entire 2025 calendar year, but he rarely featured and is set to leave the record champions.
Konrad Laimer was called upon in several positions in defence and showed great commitment in almost all games. He proved to be a tactically important all-rounder who was able to make up for the absence of others. In the current season in particular, the actual midfielder has impressed with some outstanding performances at full-back.
Alphonso Davies dominated the left side for a long time before a cruciate ligament rupture at the end of March put the brakes on his progress. Raphael Guerreiro came into focus for the left-back position after Davies‘ injury, but was only convincing in phases. Adam Aznou was also part of the squad until the summer, but was never able to recommend himself for major roles in the long term.
The Bayern defence was stable in 2025 and with the arrival of Jonathan Tah, there finally seems to be a clear leader. But who convinced you the most over the course of the year? Vote now – and feel free to comment.
