Inter Milan midfielder Piotr Zielinski is having a rough time as he cannot rediscover his old form at San Siro.

Speaking to Sportowe Fakty WP via FCInterNews, Piotr’s father, Boguslaw Zielinski, discussed his son’s difficult situation.

Piotr Zielinski was one of Europe’s most highly rated midfielders during his eight-year stint at Napoli.

Therefore, Inter fans were enthusiastic when he joined the club on a Bosman deal last summer.

However, the 31-year-old’s career has been in freefall over the past 12 months.

Recurring fitness problems and a lack of consistency have seen him tumble down the pecking order at San Siro.

Indeed, he only made eight starts in Serie A under Simone Inzaghi last season. In total, he amassed 26 league appearances.

Not even Inzaghi’s departure in the summer has changed his status.

Cristian Chivu benched Zielinski in both Serie A games this term, handing him just 18 minutes of top-flight action.

Unable to find consistency at the club level, Zielinski has derailed his international status.

Indeed, Poland coach Jan Urban has given Barcelona superstar Robert Lewandowski the captain’s armband.

Furthermore, it came at Zielinski’s expense.

“Piotr found himself in a rather awkward situation, through no fault of his own,” Zielinski’s father said. “It was obvious he would not resist.

“My son spoke with the coach, and they immediately understood each other.

“He didn’t cause any problems, didn’t cry. My son handled the matter calmly.

“He’s the vice-captain, which is also an important role,” he concluded.

Despite being demoted to vice-captain, Zielinski remains a vital part of Poland’s national team.

Indeed, he is one of their standout performers, with the nation’s hopes of reaching the World Cup resting on his shoulders.

However, his club career has hit rock bottom, as he continues to play second fiddle at Inter.
