Real Madrid Vice-Captain Fede Valverde has responded to reports over a supposed rift with manager Xabi Alonso. The Uruguayan cut a forlorn figure on the bench during Los Blancos’ 5-0 win over Kairat Almaty on Tuesday evening.
Valverde noted ahead of the clash that he much preferred to play in midfield rather than at right-back, and he was due to do so against the Kazakh side in Almaty. However to the surprise of many, he was on the bench, and when sent to warm up, decided to remain with his arms behind his back watching the game.
The 26-year-old took to social media platform Twitter/X to respond to the talk less than 24 hours later.
“I have read several articles damaging my reputation. I know I’ve had bad games, I’m aware of it. I’m not hiding, and I face the criticism head-on. I’m truly sad. People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play. I have given everything and more for this club, I’ve played while fractured, injured, and I’ve never complained or asked for a break.”
“I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident enough to tell him which position I prefer on the pitch, but I always, always made it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.”
“I’ve left my heart and soul in this club and I will continue to do so, even if sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I’d like. I swear on my pride that I will never give up and will fight until the end, playing wherever I’m needed.”
Some reports had claimed that Valverde had refused to play at right-back against Kairat, something he specifically said he had never done ahead of the game. However others claim that Alonso was unhappy with Valverde’s words to the press, and was sending him a message.
While it does seem Valverde is unlikely to have refused to play at right-back, his statement explains little of his behaviour ahead of and during the game. Valverde did not warm up with the rest of the substitutes before the match, and remained with his arms behind his back when sent to do so with Eduardo Camavinga and Jude Bellingham.
