Midfielder Federico Valverde’s absence was a talking point after Real Madrid beat Kazakhstan side Kairat Almaty 5-0 in the Champions League on Tuesday evening.
He was reportedly left out of the starting line-up due to his refusal to play at right-back, following the injuries to Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dani Carvajal.
The Uruguayan also made some gestures before and during the victory over Kairat, sparking speculation that he had fallen out with manager Xabi Alonso.
He came out last to the pitch, was absent at the pre-match rondo and avoided group drills during the second-half warm-up.
Valverde has now refuted claims through his social media account that he has refused to play certain positions for Madrid.
He said: “I have read several articles damaging my reputation. I know I’ve had bad games, I’m aware of it. I’m not hiding, and I face the criticism head-on. I’m truly sad.
“People can say many things about me, but under no circumstances can they say that I refuse to play. I have given everything and more for this club, played while fractured and injured, and never complained or asked for a break.
“I have a good relationship with the coach, which makes me feel confident enough to tell him which position I prefer on the pitch, but I always, always make it clear that I’m available to perform anywhere, on any trip, and in every game.
“I’ve left my heart and soul in this club and will continue to do so, even if sometimes it’s not enough or I’m not playing as I’d like.
“I swear on my pride that I will never give up and will fight until the end, playing wherever I’m needed.”
Valverde’s statement has not removed the possibility of friction between him and Alonso.
Alonso’s reign at Madrid is still in its infancy, and he cannot afford to clash with key players.
