Hat-trick hero Fermín López was the star of the show as Barcelona thrashed Olympiacos 6-1.
With a his treble, López led the scoring in a magical night in the Champions, achieving a feat that had not occurred for nearly four decades.
It has been 39 years since a Spaniard scored three goals for Barcelona in the Champions. The last was Pichi Alonso, who led the team to the final with three goals against Swedish side IFK Goteborg.
Despite not achieving the same prominence as when he played for Zaragoza and Espanyol, Alonso had a modest stint at Camp Nou. In the 1985/86 season, his last at the club, he scored five goals in 24 games until the match against the Swedes.
Despite the achievement, he was a substitute in the final against Steaua Bucharest and only came on in extra time. After a 0-0 draw in regular time, the Romanians won the title on penalties.
The hat-trick against Olympiacos, 39 years after Alonso's goals, was the first of Fermín's career, who had previously scored two goals in a single match seven times.
At 22 years old, the midfielder became the third youngest Spaniard to score a hat-trick for Barça in the Champions League, after Raúl González (for Real Madrid at 18 years in 1995) and Gérard López (for Valencia at 21 years in 2000).
A product of La Masia, Fermín is enjoying the best start to a season in his career. In 7 matches, he has scored 5 goals. His performance keeps him on the radar for the Spanish national team, with a good chance of being called up next year for his first World Cup.
