On Thursday night, Corinthians visit Platense in the Copa Libertadores at Estádio Vicente López at 21:00, Fernando Diniz’s first match in charge.
According to Meu Timao, Diniz will be the third coach in the club’s history to debut in a Libertadores fixture, after Osmar Loss and Vanderlei Luxemburgo.
Loss began on 24 May 2018 with a 0-1 home defeat to Millonarios, days after Fábio Carille left for Al-Wehda and with Corinthians already qualified. Wuilker Faríñez frustrated the hosts, then Carillo found the top corner to decide it. His spell ended after 25 games, with 10 wins, five draws and 10 defeats, and he was succeeded by Jair Ventura, who reached the Copa do Brasil final but faltered in the league.
Luxemburgo’s third stint started on 2 May 2023, a day after his return was announced, following Cuca’s resignation after the Remo tie and a derby loss under interim Danilo. Corinthians lost 1-2 to Independiente del Valle at Neo Química Arena, with Lautaro Díaz scoring on 21 minutes, Róger Guedes equalising on 34, Yuri Alberto having a goal ruled out, then an early second-half error by Maycon gifting Díaz the winner.
The winless run lasted until 28 May, when Corinthians beat Fluminense after eight games without victory. Luxemburgo departed in September after elimination to São Paulo in the Copa do Brasil and a poor first leg in the Sudamericana semi-final against Fortaleza, finishing with 38 matches, 14 wins, 12 draws and 12 defeats. Both previous Libertadores debuts ended in defeat.
