L'Équipe reports that Fernando Muslera’s error against Spain confirmed Uruguay’s World Cup elimination. The 40-year-old was playing at his fifth tournament.

On Monday against Cape Verde, the goalkeeper rushed from his line and gifted an equaliser, the game ending 2-2.

Spain then beat La Celeste 1-0 on Saturday after Muslera failed to deal with Alex Baena’s routine shot. He was replaced at half-time, with Marcelo Bielsa saying the decision came from the player.

In the mixed zone, the former Galatasaray keeper said he had never imagined suffering so much from this sport despite all his World Cup preparation. He told team-mates he was sorry for not having a good tournament and apologised to the Uruguayan public, accepting that might not be enough.

The episode echoed the 2018 quarter-final against France, when Antoine Griezmann’s long-range strike slipped through his hands and Les Bleus advanced 2-0.
