AC Milan have reached the Coppa Italia final after an impressive win against their bitter rivals Inter on Wednesday night. A huge result.

There is something special about beating rivals. There is something special about going a whole season without losing to your rivals. There is something special about preventing what many regard to be the ‘best’ team in Italy from winning two trophies single-handedly.

Milan, of course, have done that, all in a season where the club have been in one of their worst periods in recent memory.

Luka Jovic, who has rarely had a look in this season, picked his moments and bagged a brace – a testament to his mental strength. Whilst Tijjani Reijnders added another goal to his already impressive campaign.

So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the evening’s key stats.

An impressive performance

We start with the basic stuff, which is the match stats, and there can be no complaints about Milan’s performance. Whilst they did not dominate the ball and took fewer shots, they were certainly more ruthless. Scoring all three of their attempts on target, from three big chances.

It is also interesting to see that, despite Inter taking double the amount of shots, they only managed three shots on target.

The Rossoneri also outperformed their xG by 1.8, which is a very impressive figure, showing that the goals were of high quality, even if the chances were not on the face of it.

Just for the sake of it, we’ll touch on the big stat displayed – Milan beat Inter by three goals to nil. A dominant showing, when both teams needed it most. That’ll do, indeed.

Finalists, again

Milanisti have certainly been left waiting a while for a Coppa Italia final appearance, and as the AC Milan website states, this year will be their first since the 2017-18 season, which is nice enough in itself. Finally, a chance to end that drought.

Additionally, it is the first season where the Rossoneri have reached two finals in one campaign since 2007-08, when the club played the Club World Cup final and the UEFA Super Cup final.

Among the history makers

The two sides have faced each other five times this season, and as already stated, the Diavolo have not lost once, which is something in itself. However, Milan have also had the upper hand in the fixtures, winning three of the five games.

It is the first time in 20 seasons that this has happened, and only the third time in history, with the only other occasion coming in the 1971-72 season.

Just to put the icing on the cake, two of those three wins have denied the bitter rivals silverware. Performing when it matters.
