Fiorentina have announced the arrival of Fabio Paratici as their new sporting director, but they’ll have to wait until the end of the January window. Tottenham want him to handle the transfer market before letting him out of his contract, Corriere Fiorentino reports.

The Viola zeroed in on the former Juventus exec in mid-December, but he recently returned to London on a multi-year deal, so they had to accept a compromise. Long-serving Gigliati exec Daniele Pradè resigned earlier in the season, before the firing of Stefano Pioli, and his right-hand man, Roberto Goretti, stepped in.

Paratici was eager to return to Italy following his suspension and his time at Tottenham, accepting the offer from Fiorentina. Milan almost hired him last summer, but he couldn’t yet operate, so they appointed Igli Tare instead.

The 53-year-old got his start at Sampdoria under the tutelage of Giuseppe Marotta, whom he followed and eventually succeeded at Juventus. He spent over a decade in Turin. He later received a 30-month disqualification for leaning heavily on supposedly fake ‘plusvalenze’ to help balance the Bianconeri’s books.

The Viola have been active in January, signing Manor Solomon on loan from the Spurs and Marco Brescianini from Atalanta. Leeds United’s Jack Harrison is next on their agenda.

Our Take on Fiorentina Hiring Paratici

It’s a bizarre turn of events, as he could have just stayed a free agent waiting for a Serie A opportunity rather than go back to Tottenham, and an even weirder pairing. The Viola have been less than complementary, to say the least, of Juventus’ financial tricks in the past, and he was the full embodiment of that. They got off their high horse in desperate times.
