Former Fiorentina goalkeeper and fan favourite Sebastien Frey has opened up about La Viola’s difficult period. He recently featured on the FantaLab YouTube channel, and one particular focus was the club captaincy.
The French former stopper began by drawing parallels to his own experiences with the club he registered 216 appearances for. “Those of us who have lived in Florence know that when things go well, it’s a place that gives you a lot. But when things go badly, it takes a lot away. The pressure is very high.”
According to Frey, all eyes are on the Stadio Artemio Franchi. It’s just about whether the current crop can deal with the scrutiny. “I think that after Napoli and the two Roma matches, it’s the hottest place in Serie A. Fiorentina needs to get going again, but there’s no time.”
While worried about his former side, the ex-goalkeeper is confident that there is strength amongst the ranks. “They’re currently bottom of the table with a good team. Moise Kean is a top-notch player, and in goal is one of the best players in Europe (in David De Gea).”
So, what about the man with the armband? “If Daniele Galloppa wanted to send a signal, for various reasons, he should give the armband to De Gea. He has great international experience and keeps the team together in difficult situations. Plus, he’s a champion. In any case, I’d take it away from Ranieri.”
