As the 2026 World Cup approaches, Vladimir Petkovic is leaving no stone unturned, eager to assess every possible option in his squad to ensure he has the best at his disposal for the big event.
With a long list of injuries and several players struggling for form, here are five contenders who could make their return to the national team during the March international break.
After clocking up 26 matches for Pisa in Italy, Mehdi Léris is poised for a comeback more than two and a half years since his last call-up. The 27-year-old, capped four times, could provide a valuable solution at right-back.
He was called up just once during the last Arab Cup and was hoping for a spot in AFCON 2025, but luck wasn’t on his side. With eight goal involvements (three goals, five assists) in 22 outings for Estoril, Guitane is making waves as the best dribbler in the Portuguese league, boasting 65 successful dribbles.
Seven minutes across two games—that’s all the playing time Amin Chiakha has seen with the Algerian national team. He hasn’t donned the green jersey since March 25, 2025. With a shortage of attacking options, he could get another chance in the upcoming camp, especially now that he’s finding his feet at Rosenborg.
Called up for the November break, the Charleroi SC midfielder couldn’t convince Vladimir Petkovic for a spot in either the Arab Cup or AFCON. Nevertheless, he’s posted four goals and two assists in 33 appearances across all competitions in Belgium.
Absent from the squad since June 2024, Kevin Van Den Kerkhof is another strong candidate for the right-back slot. He’s featured in 24 matches (two goals, one assist) for his Belgian club this season.
