Thiago Almada is at the centre of a battle between River Plate and Flamengo over a return to South American football this season.
According to SuperDepor.com, the Atlético Madrid player wants his next move settled before Monday 10, when he is due to report back for 2026/27 pre-season.
Almada is currently on holiday after playing at the 2026 World Cup in the United States, Canada and Mexico, where Argentina reached the final and lost 1-0 to Spain.
River are currently viewed as in front, aided by his close ties with world champions Nicolás Otamendi and Ángel Correa at the club and a wish to return home.
Sharing an agent with Correa, Almada is thought to have agreed personal terms with the Millonario, and talks with Atlético are said to be in their final stages. The Spanish club want to recoup more than €20 million paid to Botafogo in 2025.
In recent days River have tabled what is described as a final offer close to Atlético’s asking price, pushing to buy 50% of his rights. The deal would include a long-term contract that would place Almada among the club’s best-paid players.
Flamengo remain determined to sign the Argentina international, with an offer of €30,000,000 and a deal to 2030. That proposal is said to appeal more to Atlético than to the player.
