FC Barcelona faced Birmingham City in a pre-season friendly on Friday night at St. Andrew’s with the game ending in a 2-2 draw in regulation time, following which the Blaugrana lost via penalty shootout.

Hansi Flick was pleased with many aspects of Barcelona’s performance following their draw against Birmingham City, despite the subsequent penalty shootout defeat.

Speaking after the match, the German coach admitted his side struggled at times, particularly during the opening half.

“We missed having more possession and made a few mistakes, but I’m happy. The feeling is positive, and the entire coaching staff is very satisfied with the performances of the young players,” he said.

Flick highlighted the academy players in particular, praising how they handled the intensity of facing a more physically prepared opponent.

“The most important thing is that they showed their quality. I really appreciate that. It’s a pleasure working with them and seeing how they respond in matches like this.”

Hamza continues to impress

One of the standout performers was striker Hamza Abdelkarim, who scored twice during the match.

Flick was full of praise for the youngster, describing him as both talented and hardworking.

“Hamza is very humble and has a great attitude. He always tries to give his best and has enormous potential. A striker has to be in the right place inside the box, and today he was there. That’s exactly what I ask from a number nine,” he said.

Focus on the current squad

Asked whether Barcelona still intend to sign another striker before the transfer window closes, Flick refused to discuss players who are not currently part of his squad.

“We’re only focused on the players we have right now. I’m not dreaming about anything else.”

The coach stressed that Barcelona’s ambitions for the new season will depend on daily work rather than transfer activity.

“We have big objectives this season, but everything depends on how we work every day. The players’ effort, mentality and the group’s dynamic are the most important things. Above everything else comes the team.”

Adeyemi’s first minutes

Flick also discussed summer signing Karim Adeyemi, who made his unofficial Barcelona debut, starting against Birmingham City.

While acknowledging there is still room for improvement, the manager is excited about the German international’s potential.

“He has a lot of potential to show. There are things he still needs to improve, but he’s only been training with us for a short time. He has a lot of quality, and I’m sure he’ll contribute a great deal,” he noted.

Rashford departs, Gordon arrives

The Barcelona coach reflected on Marcus Rashford’s departure following his loan spell and welcomed new signing Anthony Gordon.

“I really enjoyed working with Marcus. His situation wasn’t easy, and sometimes loan spells don’t become permanent transfers. We’ll miss him, but we have to accept it,” said the Barcelona manager.

On Gordon, Flick added: “Gordon is eager to play for Barcelona and he’s on fire.”

Clear message about Ferran Torres

Flick also addressed ongoing speculation surrounding Ferran Torres’ future, making it clear that the Spanish forward remains an important part of his plans.

“I spoke with Ferran during the World Cup, but he’s on holiday now. He’s important for us, and we want him.”
