The Scotsman is a modern day legend at Hillsborough after all he has done for the club since his arrival in 2015, which included staying on despite their struggles this season.

However, there has been intense speculation in the past week that Bannan will leave during the window, with Millwall known to be tracking the midfielder.

Barry Bannan appears to say goodbye to the Sheffield Wednesday fans

Whilst there had been no official confirmation about a transfer, Bannan’s reaction at the full-time whistle after the 2-0 defeat to the Robins suggests he is poised to leave - Mike McGrath has reported that Millwall have a medical pencilled in for the Scotsman on Sunday.

The 36-year-old was clearly emotional as he was pushed forward by his teammates to stand on his own initially as the supporters showed their appreciation - not long after he was applauded off the field by both sets of fans and players at Ashton Gate.

In the footage, which was shared on social media by journalist Rob Staton, Bannan stands applauding the fans for around two minutes as they sing his name, with his team-mates then moving forward to hug the influential captain.

If Bannan does seal a move to Millwall, he will be linking up with a side who currently sit in the play-off places, with the Lions targeting promotion to the Premier League this season.

Barry Bannan deserves a special send-off from Sheffield Wednesday

This is a sad day for all connected to Sheffield Wednesday, as Bannan has done so much for the club on the pitch over the years.

As well as his outstanding technical ability that the fans have loved watching, Bannan has shown the sort of loyalty that you rarely see in the modern game.

He has rejected the opportunity to play at a higher level in the past, and he has taken pay-cuts to stay with the Yorkshire outfit, which won’t be forgotten by the fans during what has been a miserable period in their history in recent years.

It’s a shame for the Owls that Bannan won’t finish his playing career at Hillsborough, but the chance to join Millwall is going to appeal at this stage of his career, as he could be part of a memorable promotion push over the next few months.

The Lions are set to face Wednesday at Hillsborough on February 14, and it will be strange for Wednesday if Bannan is lining up for the opposition that day, although he’s certain to get a great reception if that’s the case.
