Antonio Cassano has unleashed a scathing attack on Nicolo Barella following Inter Milan’s Champions League elimination at the hands of Bodo/Glimt, claiming the Italy midfielder has been in poor form for two years and was simply unwatchable in the defeat to the Norwegian side.

The former Inter and Milan forward made his comments during a special Champions League edition of ‘Viva El Futbol’, pulling no punches in his assessment of a player he has long been critical of.

Cassano argued that even Barella‘s previous saving grace, his work rate, has deserted him in recent times.

“I have an opinion on Barella, you know it,” he said, with quotes via FCInterNews.

“But he has been doing poorly for two years. At least before he used to run, he used to work hard. He was unwatchable against Bodo, he misplaced three or four set deliveries. An unacceptable performance.”

Cassano then widened his critique to Inter’s squad as a whole, arguing that the club needs a significant refresh this summer.

“Fresh air is needed, the cycle of the 3-5-2 is over,” he said.

“Some players are out of contract. You have to sell them and bring in serious people.”

It is a controversial take, but one that reflects a growing debate among Inter supporters about whether some of the club’s long-serving stalwarts are still performing at the required level.
