After Ruben Amorim was sacked back in January, not many Manchester United fans would’ve expected to be sat 3rd in the Premier League table with Champions League qualification secured, but here we are.
With three games still remaining, interim head coach Michael Carrick has rescued the Red Devils’ season.
Sunday’s 3-2 win over Liverpool was the latest of a number of huge results, including wins over Arsenal and Manchester City, but his overall record has also been impressive.
Just two defeats in 14 games has left Carrick in a strong position to land the job permanently.
Former Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen spoke exclusively to EPL Index and shared his thoughts on the vancant managerial role…
“The win over Liverpool has definitely helped, but there has still been some shaky performances,” said Meulensteen.
“There have been a few results where they have just nicked it at the end,” continued Meulensteen, “So it hasn’t been plain sailing the whole time.”

“It’s fine margins. There were plenty of times when they [Man United] played well under Ruben Amorim, but ended up with a draw or a defeat,” said Meulensteen, “But now we are seeing it the other way around with Michael [Carrick].”
“[Man] United know what they have and they know what he brings. They need to look at what he doesn’t have, like not managing in the Premier League or Europe, but he does know what the club is about and won a lot as a player.”
Manchester United are familiar with this situation. They appointed Ole Gunnar Solksjaer after an impressive stint as interim boss, but that eventually turned stale.
They will be hoping to avoid the same here, if possible.
When asked who he would choose as next Man United boss, Rene Meulensteen gave a pretty ambitious answer.
“I’ve seen rumours that Luis Enrique could look to leave PSG at the end of this season and he would definitely fit the bill,” said Meulensteen.

“But there is other managers who also have good pedigree, but might just lack in other areas.”
With PSG reaching the Champions League final for the second season on the bounce, Enrique is comfortably hailed as the best head coach in the world at the moment.
After guiding the French giants to their first Champions League title last season, he could retain it if they beat Arsenal in Budapest.
Other names like Crystal Palace’s Oliver Glasner and Aston Villa’s Unai Emery have also been linked, but no decision has been made yet.
