Former Newcastle United goalkeeper Rob Elliot has been appointed manager of National League club Carlisle United less than 24 hours after leaving Gateshead.

According to Sunderland Echo, the Republic of Ireland international left the Heed on Wednesday after weeks of talks with the International Stadium hierarchy. Discussions about progressing the club on and off the pitch ended without agreement, bringing his second managerial reign with the Tynesiders to a close.

Carlisle and one other club had retained interest in Elliot. The Cumbrians secured his arrival after announcing the departure of former boss Mark Hughes on Thursday lunchtime.

Elliot will hope to lead a push for promotion into the EFL in the new season. That follows a play-off semi-final home defeat by Boreham Wood that ended any thoughts of a return to League Two.

He set out a plan for attacking, aggressive football with and without the ball, underpinned by adaptability and bravery. He also wants a clear game plan and to maximise the current squad, with a team that gives everything for the badge. Elliot highlighted Carlisle as a one-club city and the importance of representing its fans and community.
