Former Sunderland academy striker Jake Waters is on trial with National League North newcomers Hebburn Town. "We have just been helping Jake out - but he wants to stay in full-time football and whether that works out for him, we will wait and see," Daniel Moore said, speaking to Sunderland Echo.

Waters featured in Tuesday’s pre-season friendly against Lee Cattermole’s Gateshead as he searches for a new club, having been released by Sunderland last month.

He rejoined Hebburn on loan midway through last season after two ACL injuries stalled his progress at the Academy of Light, and marked his debut with a brace in a 3-0 home win over Stocksbridge Park Steels.

The forward was part of the squad that clinched promotion to the second tier of non-league, seeing off FC United of Manchester and Hednesford Town in a thrilling three-horse title race.

"There are only so many you can take to make sure that fits within our budget but it’s up to Jake. If it was right, we will see what happens - but I think he has aspirations of staying full-time."

Waters could get another chance to impress when Hebburn visit Morpeth Town on Saturday, 2pm kick-off.
