Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey lands manager’s job at League One club | OneFootball

Former Wales captain Aaron Ramsey has taken the helm at Sky Bet League One club Oxford, stepping into the head coach role.

The 35-year-old succeeds Matt Bloomfield, who was dismissed following the club's relegation from the Sky Bet Championship at the close of last season.

Ramsey, a veteran of 86 caps for his country, boasts a distinguished playing career that saw him feature for prominent clubs including Cardiff, Arsenal, Juventus, and Rangers. His transition into management has included coaching stints with the Welsh national team and a period as interim manager for the Bluebirds.

Speaking on Oxford’s official website, Ramsey expressed his enthusiasm for the new challenge.

"It’s an honour and privilege to be appointed head coach of Oxford," he stated. "From my discussions with the club, I can sense the ambition and desire for success, which gives me great excitement about this opportunity."

He added that this moment has been years in the making, drawing on his experience under "some of the best managers in the game" and high-pressure environments.

He outlined his vision for the team, aiming to "bring a culture of high standards, professionalism and work ethic to this talented group of players."

Ramsey promised a clear identity for his teams, built on "elite habits, with a commitment to improving every day," and a squad that "fights for the badge until the end, and one that makes our supporters proud."

The midfielder, whose coaching staff details are expected soon, enjoyed significant success during his playing days, securing three FA Cups with Arsenal, a Serie A title and Coppa Italia with Juventus, and the Scottish Cup during a loan spell at Rangers.

Ramsey only called time on his playing career in April, but has wasted little time in taking the step to move into management on a full-time basis ahead of the 2026-27 season.
