Bayern Munich chief Christoph Freund has ensured there will be no rush or pressure applied to Manuel Neuer as to whether he will extend his contact or not.

“With Manu, it was always clear that his decision was mainly based on how his body felt. He knows his body better than anyone else," Freund told TZ München.

“It's truly exceptional to play at this level at his age. There will be no pressure or deadline from our side, just open communication. Therefore, aiming for the period of March/April makes sense,” he added.

Regarding the veteran shot-stopper being forced to give up playing time to his understudy Jonas Urbig, the Bayern sporting director made it clear that their relationship is harmonious.

"Manu is at a different stage in his career, but he's handling this role exceptionally well. He supports Jonas, exchanges ideas with him a lot, they often sit down and talk. That's a great quality.

We spoke openly with him and told him that the situation with Jonas could be fantastic – for everyone involved. Especially when you're mentoring and developing your own successor.

“There couldn't be a better teacher for a young goalkeeper than Manuel Neuer,” explained Freund, who is more than happy with how the two goalkeepers are getting on.
