2-1 success before training camp

In today's friendly match, held shortly before we start our training camp, our Red Bulls defeated Górnik Zabrze 2–1. Nikolas Veratschnig and Karim Konate scored for our side.

Match summary

Our Red Bulls took control right from the start, keeping the visiting defense, and especially their goalkeeper, busy with several attempts on goal. Nikolas Veratschnig eventually turned this dominance into a lead - as our new signing scored the deserved opener with a powerful shot from around 20 metres out (23').

We continued to play with great enthusiasm and attacking intent, while at the other end, Christian Zawieschitzky remained virtually untested. Just before the half-time whistle, Edmund Baidoo missed a chance to make it 2–0, failing to convert a golden opportunity to extend the lead.

With an entirely new line-up on the pitch, the second 45 minutes were a bit quieter, though the decisive moments came right after the restart. After the Polish runners-up equalised at 1–1 following a corner kick (54'), our boys responded almost immediately: Adam Daghim embarked on a powerful solo run from the halfway line, dribbling all the way into the penalty area, even without his left boot after a challenge from an opponent, before Karim Konate finished the move to make it 2–1 (56').

Daghim could have effectively sealed the win later on, but his volley struck the post (73'). No further goals came as we claimed a thoroughly deserved victory.

Line-up

Zawieschitzky (46. Sarcevic); Veratschnig (46. Morgalla), Boma (46. Chase), Mellberg (46. Zabransky), Krätzig (46. Schmid; 79. Bischoff); Barry (46. Kawamura), Diabate (46. Mazurek); Baidoo (46. Redzic), Kitano (46. Diakite; 79. Matijasevic), Camara (46. Daghim); Vertessen (46. Konate)

Other things to note

  • Our new signings Abubakr Barry, Bartosz Mazurek, and Dominik Schmid made their friendly debuts.
  • Immediately following today's match, FC Red Bull Salzburg are heading to Flachau for a six-day training camp.

Views after the match

Today served as a real yardstick for us to see where we stand in our preparations. Our opponents have their first competitive match in ten days, so we performed very well given that context. By and large, we were well-structured - and aggressive in our pressing, especially in the first half - which allowed us to create plenty of scoring chances. That is the one area where we need to improve - we have to become more clinical. However, today we saw glimpses of the style of play and the mindset we want to adopt for the season ahead. That includes knowing when to accelerate while also having the patience to build up an attack. Things are moving in the right direction. Now I’m looking forward to the training camp!

It was certainly an intense and instructive match, but it was great fun, and it’s obviously fantastic that we managed to win in the end. The new players have already settled in brilliantly - they have ideal conditions here, and I’m especially happy for Takumu Kawamura, who is finally able to play football again after his long injury break. Looking ahead to the training camp, I’m simply looking forward to the sessions themselves and gaining new experiences - and, of course, we'll have to have a few games of cards together at the hotel.
