Slot, Hughes and Edwards need new deals

But Liverpool need to also pay attention to the contract situations regarding major off-field figures too. Head coach Arne Slot signed a three-year contract when he joined from Feyenoord back in 2024 - so he too will require a new deal before long.

Likewise, highly-rated sporting director Richard Hughes is also out of contract in 2027.

Furthermore - the FSG CEO of Football Michael Edwards’ contract also extends to 2027. Brought back under the FSG umbrella to lead the post-Jurgen Klopp era, Edwards has given the blueprint for the Reds’ recent successes to both Hughes and Slot.

The former Liverpool sporting director is a pivotal figure at the club as well as in the wider organisation. Now it’s been claimed by TBR Football that talks are underway to secure the executive’s future at the club.

Talks opened with Edwards over new contract

Once Edwards is secured beyond 2027 then talks should begin with both Slot and Hughes over their new deals.

“Liverpool owners Fenway Sports Group have opened discussions with their footballing chief, Michael Edwards, over a new long-term deal,” the report reads.

“FSG have already had talks with Edwards about their future plans, and he is central to them.

“Edwards, in turn, has plans in place to extend both Hughes and Slot. All three have deals that are due to run until 2027.”

Edwards’ first spell at the club covered 2016 until 2022 - orchestrating the major signings which took Liverpool to the Champions League and Premier League titles under Klopp.

Edwards is 'the best in the world' say FSG

“I am told that FSG are very happy with the status quo – they love Edwards, and believe his decisions over Hughes and in turn Slot, have been invaluable to the club’s success,” TBR’s Graeme Bailey writes.

“The fact that FSG trusts Edwards, Hughes, and Slot was key in them approving a huge summer spend, which included breaking the British record twice.

“Sources tell me that unless FSG were convinced they would not have committed to the spend, they believe they have the best off-field team in the world, and they want to keep it in place.”

So it’s clear to FSG that they have got the best footballing CEO in the world in Edwards. His contract will represent the first domino to fall as plans are made to continue the fruitful working conditions that brought the club to the Premier League title last season.

Edwards and Hughes also oversaw a remarkable summer transfer campaign - bringing in Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak on two successive British record deals.
