Santos beat Deportivo Cuenca 3-0 at Vila Belmiro on Tuesday night to seal second place in their Copa Sudamericana group. According to Diario Do Peixe, they will now face a side dropping out of the Libertadores in the knockout phase.
At 0-0, Gabigol won a penalty that was not given despite a VAR recommendation. He then opened the scoring in the first half after a neat exchange in the build-up involving Igor Vinícius.
Moments into the second half, Miguelito made it 2-0. He later had another effort ruled out for offside and helped create Gabriel Bontempo's third, a composed chip over the goalkeeper.
Goalkeeper Gabriel Brazão was largely untroubled until stoppage time, when he saved a penalty conceded by substitute Moisés. Adonis Frías and Luan Peres were steady, with Frías blocking Cuenca's clearest first-half chance.
Cuca's side dominated throughout. Willian Arão and Barreal impressed, while Lautaro Díaz, Rony and Robinho Jr made little impact. Gabigol was the standout performer, scoring once and influencing the other two goals.
