Reds had been beaten by Crystal Palace last weekend
Liverpool were beaten by Galatasaray by a single goal on matchday two in the Champions League League Phase.
The Reds were downed by a Victor Osimhen penalty, which was conceded by stand-in right-back Dominik Szoboszlai, who felled Baris Yilmaz in the first half.
Arne Slot plumped to play the Hungarian at full-back with Jeremie Frimpong, a natural defender, played at right wing, while talisman Mohamed Salah was dropped to the bench.
The Premier League champions controlled much of the possession at RAMS Park in Istanbul, but they struggled to do much with it against a resolute Turkish defence and a ferocious, bubbling home support that jeered, whistled and hissed every touch from the men in green.
Slot’s side looked shaky in their defensive third, with Yilmaz denied in the early exchanges by a smart smother from Alisson, and Osimhen broke in behind Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate on occasions.
The Reds had half-chances of their own as Hugo Ekitike tested Ugurcan Cakir in the home net, while Florian Wirtz stung the palms of the Turkish goalkeeper.
But things went from bad to worse for the visitors, as Alisson and Ekitike were both forced off with injury concerns, although their respective problems are still unconfirmed.
Liverpool were denied a penalty late on by VAR as Konate went down in the area under a high challenge from Wilfried Singo as the pair went for a bouncing ball, but the referee’s initial on-field decision was overturned, with the right-back getting a toe on the ball.
It’s back to the drawing board for Slot, who has now overseen two straight defeats in all competitions.
