Luton Town’s hopes of making an instant return to the Championship hang in the balance after a rough patch of form in League One.

The Hatters were expected to be involved right at the top end of the division after successive relegations from the Premier League all the way down to the third-tier, but the pressure is still on to give themselves a chance of sealing immediate promotion back.

Under Jack Wilshere, the Hatters are winless from their last three league games, suffering back-to-back defeats on the road to Cardiff City and Wigan Athletic.

Despite the disappointment, Luton were expected to get back to winning ways when they hosted relegation-threatened Burton Albion at Kenilworth Road last weekend.

But Wilshere’s men were denied all three points right at the death, as a 92nd minute strike from Fábio Tavares cancelled out Nahki Wells’ first-half effort to share the spoils.

Understandably, Luton fans were angry after the game, venting their frustrations towards both the playing and coaching staff.

And it was Wilshere who got himself involved in a heated altercation with the fans as he made his way down to the tunnel, having to be dragged back by his own players.

It could well be an indication that he is feeling the pressure, but it’s not a good sign when togetherness is needed ahead of a massive final 13 games of the League One campaign.

With this in mind, FLW’s Luton Town fan pundit has reacted to Wilshere’s dispute with the supporters and issued where the blame lies for the Hatters’ struggles this term.

Speaking to Football League World, Luton Town fan pundit Simon Mills has said he can understand Jack Wilshere’s frustrations and has instead blamed CEO Gary Sweet for the way the season has unfolded, demanding for change at the top end of the football club to turn their fortunes around.

Simon told FLW: “I think that it’s not Jack Wilshere’s fault things are the way they are. I think it’s at the top of the club. I think Gary Sweet needs to lose his job or resign, then we focus on Power Court.

“I think Luton Town need a director of football who’s going to come in, be independent, say ‘right, this is what the issues are’ and with no favouritism.

“Jack Wilshere might be the right manager at the wrong time, again, I don’t know, but I don’t blame him because three managers on the bounce, you’ve got to start looking elsewhere for where the issues lie.

“I hope Wilshere can recover from this because it was his ‘Richard Money moment’, as we say, at Luton Town, but I’d still don’t want to see him go, I’d rather see changes higher up.”

Jack Wilshere has to get more out of his Luton Town squad

It’s been a rollercoaster ride for Luton Town fans these last three seasons, hitting the heights of Premier League football to suffering a disastrous double relegation down to League One.

While their drop from the Championship was a shock, their inability to be one of the more domineering sides in the third-tier is unacceptable, particularly when they possess some supposedly top players at that level, such as Nahki Wells, Isaiah Jones, Kasey Palmer and Ali Al-Hamadi.

So from that, you can understand the frustration of the Luton faithful, and Wilshere probably feels the same way, leading to his outburst.

It’s the signs of an inexperienced manager feeling the heat, but he has to keep a cool head on his shoulders and get the supporters back onside if they are to taste any success this season.

Under the likes of Nathan Jones and Rob Edwards, the connection between the players, staff, and fans was imperative to their success and the catalyst that fired them to the Premier League, but that all seems to have disappeared, and is one of the reasons for their struggles.

The board also shouldn’t have been so naïve to appoint a novice manager into such a massive job, particularly when the club needed experience and a winning mentality to help get them back to the second-tier.

On reflection, mistakes are being made from all angles of the football club, but the hierarchy’s decision to appoint such an inexperienced boss is potentially turning out to be the most costly of all, at a time when they had to right the wrongs of last season as quickly as possible.
