Gateshead manager Rob Elliot has praised the impact of Sunderland forward Ethan Moore during his loan and is eager to explore a permanent deal for the 21-year-old.

“Ethan has been absolutely superb and we know he’s had a really difficult time with injuries. He didn’t really play a lot of football before he came into Gateshead.” He was speaking to Sunderland Echo.

Moore returned last August after more than two years out, coming on for Sunderland Under-21s in a 3-2 defeat to Southampton. After a handful of academy outings, he joined Gateshead in February for the rest of the season, making his senior bow in a 1-0 loss to Boston United.

He has since made eight further appearances as Gateshead rebounded. Days after his debut, a 2-1 home defeat to Brackley Town left them bottom and 11 points from safety. A sequence of just two defeats in their next 14 has moved them eight points clear, and survival will be secured with at least two points from the final three games.

Moore has been used from the bench, featuring across a Bank Holiday double header that yielded four points at Carlisle United and at home to Scunthorpe United. He will hope for a first start in trips to Aldershot Town and Altrincham and a home meeting with Jermain Defoe’s Woking over the next fortnight.

“We are hoping to get him signed up and sealed for the future.”
