Former Napoli full-back Faouzi Ghoulam is still confused by Paris Saint-Germain’s decision to let Gianluigi Donnarumma leave the club so easily this summer, citing a ‘lack of respect’ for Manchester City’s new shot stopper.

Donnarumma is currently playing against Napoli in his first Champions League match for his new club. You can follow the action from Man City vs. Napoli on the Football Italia Liveblog.

Ghoulam: ‘Doesn’t make sense’ for PSG to sell Donnarumma to Man City

Donnarumma completed a €27m transfer from PSG to Manchester City right at the end of the summer transfer window.

The Italy national team captain had been into the final year of his contract at the Parc des Princes, and had not come to an agreement over an extension despite several months of negotiations.

In the end, PSG allowed Donnarumma to leave following their signing of France international Lucas Chevalier.

There have since been suggestions that Chevalier’s ball-playing ability makes him a better fit for Luis Enrique and PSG’s system, but Ghoulam argues that if Donnarumma is good enough for Pep Guardiola, then he should have been good enough for Enrique as well.

“For me, there was a lack of respect towards him in Paris,” Ghoulam said on Sky Sport, via Corriere dello Sport.

“Because he’s such an important player, the importance he has inside the dressing room,” Ghoulam explained.

“People don’t always see these things, but I know for sure that he was a player that was loved by the fans after a difficult start with them. The fans took to him, his goalkeeping made PSG win all this.

“Sending him away like they did, the excuse that he isn’t good enough with his feet doesn’t add up to me given they sold him to a team where the coach asks a lot of his goalkeepers on the ball.”
