UEFA has handed Benfica winger Gianluca Prestianni a six-game suspension for a homophobic insult directed at Vinicius Jr during the Champions League tie with Real Madrid, the decision announced on Friday, 24 April.
"O que me custou foi ser acusado de ser racista, algo que nunca fui nem serei. (...) Para nós, argentinos, é um insulto normal chamar cagón [cagão] ou maricón [maricas]", said Prestianni earlier this month, speaking to Telefe.
He has publicly acknowledged using the term "maricón" towards the Real Madrid forward. It was not proven that he used "macaco", an allegation by the Brazilian that led to the match being halted.
Of the six matches, three are suspended for the next two years. With one already served by missing the second leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, he has two still to complete.
The case centred on homophobic remarks made during that tie, following which UEFA issued its formal sanction on Friday, 24 April.
